that by this time next year, 34 thousand u-s troops in afghanistan will have returned home. the president will make the announcement when he delivers his "state of the union" address before congress and a tv audience of millions. admininistration officials say the economy will also be a major focus of tonight's address. the president will talk about his plans to boost the economy increase jobs, and expand the middle class. several local parents of gun victims will be attending the president's speech. carolyn murray will be sitting in the gallery at the state of the union tonight. her son, justin, was shot and killed in evanston, in november. he was not the intended target, and no one has been arrested. murray says she hopes to make lawmakers more aware of what's happening in the country. my son is not coming back. she hopes there is time to talk to the president. illinois senator mark kirk released a video statement today. urging president obama and congress to take a serious look at legislation to protect americans from gun violence. lukens and democrats in a way that is practical legislation.

"my only regrets are the guys i couldn't save. that's what keeps me up at night. but every shot i took, i felt extremely justified." police arrested 25-year-old eddie ray routh... a former marine who is believed to have left the service in 2010, according to a u-s military official. the erath county sheriff says the three men apparently went to the gun range together. after the shooting authorities say routh retreated to his sister's house and told her about the incident. she then called police and after a short pusuit, routh was arrested. he is now facing capital murder and two other charges. chris kyle and chad littlefield were both invovled in helping veterans with p-t-s-d... however, it is uncertain whether routh was a veteran they were counseling. "i don't know that we'll ever know. i mean, he's the only one that knows that. but at this point, he hasn't made any comments to law enforcement as to why he did it." travis cox knew both kyle and littlefield, and remembers them as men with a vision to support veteran

story. the return of the carnival cruise ship to u-s soil. the carnival triumph pulled into mobile, alabama late last night. after drifting in the carribean for five days. more than 42-hundreds passengers were stuck on the ship with overflowing toilets and stench-filled cabins .when a fire knocked out power to the boat. the passengers boarded buses to take them to hotels and other destinations before heading home. passengers here in chicago are certainly talking about their ordeal. >> that afternoon. she was one of those passengers. she says she wants a hot meal and cannot wait to sleep in her warm bed tonight. it is supposed to be a celebration of her mother's birthday. it turned into a nightmare vacation. she had words of praise for the crew of the ship. she is angry at carnival and will never trouble with them again. >> she came back with few belongings. most of her things were soaked and sewage. she also shared some photos from our phone. here's one of the tugboat's helping the ship. she shot another picture showing passengers huddled together trying to charge their cell phon

to the u-s coast guard, oil from the leak caught fire when it came into contact with the hot engine. the engine fire killed the power to the rest of the ship, shutting down vital systems. the ship was stuck in the gulf for five days. investigators say a full report on the ship could take up to 6 months. scientists have found fragments of that meteor that hit russia, and so apparently have a lot of other people. online ads from russia are offering pieces of the meteorite for as much as ten thousand dollars. a gram of the space rock is selling for forty times more than gold. but there's no way to really know if what you're getting is the real deal, without extensive testing. russia's government estimates the meteor caused a least 33-million dollars worth of damage. gas prices spiking in the chicago area. and grocery stores are offering some deals that could help you save a few dollars. wgn's robert jordan has details on the programs. now that gasoline prices are over $4 per gallon, the hike asst is digging deeply into the pockets of motorists. is it hard for you with these gas prices?
